The name ‘boemboe’ originated from Indonesian word ‘bumbu’, which means ‘spice’. It describes the variation of Indonesian social-culture reflected in the short films. The organization founded in the beginning of 2003 as a meeting point for everybody who share concerns about the development of Indonesian short film and "a space to breath" for the Indonesian short film everywhere in the world. It aims to open the way for independent short filmmakers to develop the networking among themselves and outside Indonesia. In 2009, this focus is re-instated as boemboe.org shifts its focus from ‘short film distribution’ into ‘short film studies’ in order to answer the new challenges in Indonesian short film.
